Transit Services

The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council is helping provide public transportation services to the residents in urbanized and non-urbanized areas of the region. A network of public transportation systems provide flexible routes, fixed routes, and demand/response service to shopping centers, businesses, and medical facilities, all buses are wheelchair accessible.

Rio Metro Urban Transportation System proudly introduces “Intercity Transit.” In an effort to promote further coordination between the cities of Mission, McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Weslaco, and Mercedes Rio Metro has extended its service times and coverage area to include transit Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm in the larger metropolitan areas of Hidalgo County. The citizens of the County will have a greater variety of transit options available such as shopping at various retail centers, attending higher educational facilities, or attending recreational activities patrons. These transit options were previously unavailable. In keeping with its seamless transit initiative Rio Metro Intercity gives passengers the choice of transferring to other public transit systems, such as McAllen Express Transit and national and international lines such as Valley Transit/Greyhound Lines and Groupo Senda providing access to interstate and international travel. Rio Metro’s long standing practice of addressing the transit needs of the Elderly and Disabled has not changed and the new Intercity program continues to offer safe, reliable, and affordable transportation services.

Rio Transit Rural Transportation System provides Rural Transportation Services in the rural areas of the Counties of Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy through a system of Fixed Route Service and Demand Response Service. These services extend access for rural Colonia residents to important services (i.e., health care, education, employment, shopping, personal recreation, and numerous other services.) The LRGVDC continuously promotes general public participation and rider-ship while maintaining transportation services to the handicapped and elderly respectively. Complementary Para-Transit service is provided through route deviation of the fixed route. “Day in advance” notice is required for complementary Para-Transit service and the demand response service.

Rio Metro Harlingen proudly introduces “Intercity Transit.” In the City of Harlingen, Rio Metro Harlingen Flexible Routes has extended its service times and coverage area to include transit Monday through Saturday from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. The citizens of Harlingen will have a greater variety of transit options available such as shopping at various retail centers, attending higher educational facilities, or attending recreational activities patrons. These transit options were previously unavailable. In keeping with its seamless transit initiative Rio Metro Harlingen gives passengers the choice of transferring to other public transit systems, such as Rio Transit Rural Transportation and national and international lines such as Valley Transit/Greyhound Lines providing access to interstate and international travel.
